Apakah anda tahu bagaimana cara mengundang seseorang ke rumahmu untuk makan malam dalam Bahasa Inggris? Atau mengajak seseorang untuk menonton film? Ekspresi atau ungkapan dalam Bahasa Inggris apa yang akan anda gunakan?  Berikut adalah beberapa ungkapan yang dapat kamu gunakan untuk mengundang,  menerima undangan atau menolaknya.

Inviting = Mengundang
Do you want to go to the movies tonight?
Would you like to go to the theatre tomorrow?
Would you be interested in going to the the stadium next Sunday?
How do you fancy going to the the restaurant for dinner?
How about going to the movies?
Care to come over for lunch?
I was just wondering if you would like to come over for a drink.
We'd be delighted to have you over for my birthday party.

Accepting invitations = Menerima undangan
Sure. What time?
I'd love to, thanks.
That's very kind of you, thanks.
That sounds lovely, thank you.
What a great idea, thank you.
Sure. When should I be there?

Declining invitations = Menolak undangan
I can't.  I have to work.
This evening is no good.  I have an appointment.
I'm busy tomorrow.  Can I take a rain check* on that?
That's very kind of you, but actually I'm doing something else this afternoon.
Well, I'd love to, but I'm already going out to the restaurant.
I'm really sorry, but I've got something else on.
I really don't think I can - I'm supposed to be doing something else.
(*rain check: used to tell someone that you cannot accept invitations now, but would like to do so at a later time:)

Conversation 1

Ahmad: We are planning to go to Bandung. Would you like to join us?
Brenda: Thank you. I’d like to very much.
Ahmad: My brother Eddy will be 22 on this Saturday and we are going to celebrate his
 birthday at one of the famous restaurants there. I’d like you to come to our
 house at 6 in the evening.
Brenda: I’d love to, but I’m afraid I can’t. you know I must take my mother to her doctor
 on Saturday night.

Conversation 2

Dom: We’re going on a trekking expedition this Sunday. How about joining us?
Ricky: That sounds a nice idea.
Dom: How about you Nicky?
Nicky: Thank you very much for asking me, but I have an appointment with my girlfriend
 on Sunday.
Dom: How about you Tia?
Tia: With pleasure.

Activity 1. In pairs, Read the following dialogues then identify expressions of inviting people, accepting, and refusing invitations.

1. A : I’d like to invite you to come the “Save our Earth” charity activity  on Sunday.
B : I’d love to come. Thanks.

2. A : Would you mind coming to my house this evening?
B : I’d like to, but I’ve already planned to visit my parents.

3. A : Would you like to go to Botanical Garden ?
B : Thanks, I’d love to. What time is it?

4. A : Let’s just meet at the GREEN HOUSE, around 7:30.
B : That sounds fine.

5. A : Can you and Susan come to the eradicating mosquito breeding activity?
B : We’d love to but I’m afraid we can’t. We’re going out with friends for dinner.



Activity 2. In pairs, read the dialogues below, and then identify the expressions of inviting people, accepting and refusing invitations.

1. At the office.
Staff : I’d like to invite you to come to my engagement party on  Sunday.
Supervisor : I’d love to come. Thanks. What time is the party?
Staff : In the afternoon at 4, and please come with your spouse.
Supervisor : Okay. I’ll be there.

2. Mrs. Brown comes to Mrs. Burke’s house.
Mrs. Brown     : Would you mind coming to my house this evening?
Mrs. Burke : I’d like to, but I’ve already planned to visit my parents.
Mrs. Brown   : Actually, I’ll have a dinner party. We’ll celebrate our wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Burke   : Oh, congratulations to you. Hopefully your wedding will
last forever.
Mrs. Brown   : Thank you very much.

3. On the way home.
David : I have two tickets to Environtment charity concert on Saturday night. Would you like to go?
Alex : Thanks, I’d love to. What time is it?
David : It’s at 8:00.

4. At school.
Jacky : There is a scientific environtment exhibition in Java Mall. It is from Thursday to Sunday.Would you like to come with me?
Edwin  : I’d love to. When will we go?
Jacky : I’ll pick you up at 4:00 p.m. Is it OK?
Edwin  : That’s fine.
